Gymnema FAQ's

What is Gymnema Sylvestre?

The Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) plant grows in the tropical forests of central and southern India and in parts of Africa. Herbalists in India have used the leaves of this long, slender plant as a treatment for diabetes for more than 2,000 years. Gymnema root has also been used to treat snake bites, constipation, stomach complaints, water retention, and liver disease. Doctors in India note that Gymnema Sylvestre is used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and in food additives against obesity and caries. Gymnema is also reported to have anti-allergic, antiviral, lipid lowering and other beneficial effects. Today, gymnema sylvestre is also known as gymnema, gurmar, gurmabooti, periploca of the woods, and meshasringi (ram's horn).

Can't I get Gymnema Sylvestre in my diet?

No, and even if you could, you wouldn't want to. In its natural state, Gymnema is an extremely bitter plant that is known for its unpleasant taste.

Has Gymnema Sylvestre been clinically proven to help anything?

Gymnema is well known as a treatment for Type II Diabetes. It is also known as a weight loss aid, because it lowers the body's craving for sweets. Additional research for more benefits of this herbal supplement is ongoing.

How effective is Gymnema Sylvestre?

Gymnema fared very well in research comparing it to prescription medications for diabetes.

Are any side effects associated with Gymnema Sylvestre ?

None when taken in standard doses.

How much Gymnema Sylvestre should I be taking?

When taken in capsule form, the dosage of gymnema is one 100-mg capsule taken three to four times daily. However, the strengths of commercial products can vary. A person taking gymnema should follow the directions on the package.

Gymnema is also available in powdered form. The recommended dosage for powdered gymnema leaves is 0.5-1 tsp (2-4 g) per day. An herbal tea can prepared by pouring 1 cup (240 ml) of boiling water over the powered leaves. The mixture is covered and steeped for 10-15 minutes. Due to the powered nature of gymnema, the tea will need to be strained before drinking.
